Listen live online Thursday via JoeInsider.com as Portage Northern meets Birmingham Brother Rice in a Division 1 baseball state semifinal around 11:30 a.m. ET from Michigan State University.
The winner goes to Saturday morning’s championship, which the Huskies have only been to once before in their 2015 runner-up campaign. The Warriors last did it as the 2013 runner-up, but they’ve been in six baseball championships in total with titles in 2008, 1994, and 1992.
Second-ranked Portage Northern has the most wins of the remaining teams with their 37-7 record and is the highest-ranked team left from the final coaches poll after defeating top-ranked Woodhaven in Saturday’s super regional 7-3. Before that, the Huskies survived a nine-inning duel in the regional final with a 5-4 win against Grand Ledge.
Although unranked in the last poll, Brother Rice (26-12) returns to the final four after getting eliminated by Woodhaven in 2018. The Warriors outlasted fifth-ranked Romeo 4-3 in a 12-inning marathon regional final Saturday, then handled Fenton 9-1 in the super regional game.
