Listen live Friday evening via JoeInsider.com as Portage Northern heads north toward Muskegon to meet Mona Shores in a Division 2 football regional final.
Friday’s game will be the first-ever regional for the 9-2 Husky football team, who rolled Okemos 56-15 last week to claim a district crown. The 56-point output was their first 50+ game since 2015. To begin the postseason, they flattened crosstown foe Portage Central 35-7, avenging their 21-20 regular season loss to the Mustangs.
The historic season is a huge turnaround from a 2-7 mark only one season ago. It’s only their second time ever getting to nine wins, joining a 9-1 record from 1981. It is the second time to the regional for Mona Shores, joining their state runner-up 2014 campaign.
The 10-1 Sailors pounded Jenison 49-10 to claim the district in a far different game than their tight 49-42 week seven win over the Wildcats. In the first round, Mona Shores edged Forest Hills Central 34-28, avenging a loss from last year’s district final.
Portage Northern has scored 352 points while allowing only 137 on the season. Their defense has been particularly sturdy in recent weeks, allowing only 32 points in the prior four games. Mona Shores has scored 486 points while allowing 260. The Sailors have scored 33 or more in all 11 of their games this season.
Of the eight remaining teams in the Division 2 field, the Sailors have the second-highest playoff point total and are one of two at the 10-win mark. The Huskies are tied for fourth with Birmingham Groves. Friday’s winner advances to the state semifinal against either Walled Lake Western or Midland.
