Listen live Friday evening via JoeInsider.com to a basketball doubleheader between rivals Kalamazoo Central and Loy Norrix with the girls at 6:30 p.m. and the boys after around 8 p.m. from Western Michigan’s University Arena. Friday’s games will be the debut for both Maroon Giant squads as well as for the Knight girls.
Kalamazoo Central comes into the season as the defending champion in the SMAC East for both genders. The Maroon Giant boys are 40-0 in SMAC East divisional play since the current group of teams were combined, although it will be one team fewer this season with Mattawan switched to the SMAC West. Last season, K-Central went 19-3 and fell in the regional semifinal.
Loy Norrix’s boys have seen the floor this season and sit at 1-2 already. After losses to state runner-up West Ottawa and Lansing Waverly, the Knights grabbed their first win Tuesday over Parchment. Third in the SMAC East last year at 6-4, LN hopes to give K-Central its biggest challenge within the division. They had two tight affairs last year, won by the Maroon Giants 43-39 and 73-62. Loy Norrix’s last boys win against K-Central was on January 26, 2013.
The Maroon Giants also made it to the regional semifinal on the ladies end, finishing 17-4 along with a 9-1 SMAC East mark and division crown. They’ve been the division champion thrice in the prior four campaigns. As for Loy Norrix, they host that new head coach Trey McDonald gets them to their first winning season since 2011-12. K-Central had 63-26 and 80-42 wins over the Knights last season.
