Listen live Wednesday evening via JoeInsider.com as Portage Northern meets the Kalamazoo Eagles and Portage Central faces Kalamazoo United on the ice. Wednesday’s games will be the first Southwest Michigan High School Hockey League games of 2019.
Entering the new year, the SWMHSHL standings have the Southwest Michigan Blades on top at 5-0, followed by both Portage Central and Mattawan at 3-2. The Eagles sit fourth at 2-2, trailed by the Huskies at 1-3 and United at 0-5. The top four at season’s end compete in the league tournament.
Wednesday’s 5:30 p.m. contest will be the first meeting this season between the Eagles and Huskies. Portage Northern has a 4-9 overall record, winning their first game of 2019 Saturday 6-3 at Okemos. The Eagles are 5-10-1, dropping their Saturday contest 2-0 at the Mid-Michigan Marauders. The Huskies won both regular season meetings last season against the Eagles (7-5 and 6-3), but the Eagles took a tournament consolation game (5-2).
The 7:45 p.m. game is the second meeting this season between Portage Central and Kalamazoo United with PC taking the first meeting 6-2 on November 21. The Mustangs are 4-6 overall, dropping their first 2019 contest Friday in a 6-3 loss at Big Rapids. United is 0-9-1 and fell Friday to Lowell/Caledonia and Sunday to the LSJ Warriors to open their 2019.
