Listen live Wednesday via JoeInsider.com as Hackett Catholic Prep battles Kalamazoo Christian in a regional boys soccer semifinal match from Portage Northern.
The seventh-ranked Irish are set for their ninth consecutive regional appearance while the Comets are in for the first time since 2010. K-Christian’s district drought saw Hackett as a huge cause, as usually they would be logically paired in the same group due to geography. That wasn’t the case for 2019, putting the crosstown foes on track for a regional collision.
Hackett’s postseason opened with lopsided 5-0 wins over Jackson Christian and Jackson Lumen Christi. In the district finale, the Irish had to overcome ninth-ranked Hillsdale Academy on the road, winning a 2-1 overtime affair. The wins put HCP at a 14-6-1 overall record.
Kalamazoo Christian drew the first round bye, opening their postseason with a 4-2 semifinal win at Schoolcraft. In the championship, the Comets downed Heritage Christian 4-0, putting them at 8-10-2 overall.
The Irish picked up a 5-0 win over the Comets in their September meeting at Soisson. Hackett has controlled the boys side of the soccer rivalry in recent years, winning every matchup back to at least 2012. The winner moves to Saturday’s regional final against the winner of Tuesday’s semifinal of fifth-ranked Dansville and 14th-ranked Hartford.
