Portage Central downed Mattawan 3-1 Wednesday evening, using three powerplay goals in the second period to gain the advantage. The win gives the Mustangs a 2-0 start in league play after winning only two SWMHSHL regular season games in the 2017-18 campaign.
In the scoreless first period, the Wildcats were able to kill off a five-minute major penalty. However, another major early in the second doomed Mattawan, with Portage Central getting all three goals within the first three minutes. Two tallies from Justin Hayward and one by Konnor McLeod put the Mustangs up 3-0 into the second intermission.
Mattawan’s only goal came early in the third period on a five-on-three powerplay with sophomore Max Parker’s first career league goal. PC goalie Bryan Gracey held firm for the remainder of the match, finishing with 24 saves in the win. Brendan Pellerito stopped 32 in defeat for the Wildcats.
Portage Central moves to 3-2 overall and 2-0 in league play. Ahead is a trip Saturday to Notre Dame Prep, followed by the annual Portage Rotary game against Portage Northern Monday at Wings Event Center.
Mattawan drops to 0-5 overall and 0-2 in league play. Their third league contest comes Friday at Wings West against the Kalamazoo Eagles, followed by a trip to Lansing Saturday against Capital City.
