Portage Northern edged Portage Central 1-0 in Wednesday’s District #4 semifinal at Mustang Field, sending the Huskies to Saturday’s championship match against Loy Norrix. The PN win also snaps a six-game losing streak against PC with their first win since the 2016 SMAC Championship.
The Mustangs had the shots advantage more than two-to-one, but a stellar outing in net by sophomore Jack McDaniel gave Portage Northern their eighth shutout of the year. McDaniel had seven saves, including five in a first half largely controlled by Portage Central.
The second half possession was closer to even with the Huskies breaking through in the 64th minute on a Seth Paige corner kick. The ball deflected to junior Isaiah Spillers, who from his back was able to redirect the ball in for the lone score. PC goalkeeper Kyle Toutanji argued with the referees that he was fouled on the play trying to leap for the corner, but after a brief discussion, the officials ruled it a good goal.
Portage Central closes the season at 7-7-6 and graduates seniors Toutanji, Christoper Middleton, Max Neuman, Ben Sosville, John Yates, Kevin Wang, Ben Kahmark, Braiden Page, Jaden Hanold, Devin Horn, and Lukas Henry.
Portage Northern improves to 13-7-2 with a chance Saturday to claim their first district title since 2015. The Huskies face Loy Norrix, whom they beat 5-1 in early September. However, the Knights (8-5-4) are hot with a 5-0-2 mark in their last seven matches. You can listen to Saturday’s match live via JoeInsider.com with a 12 pm kickoff at Portage Central.
