Portage Central flattened crosstown foe Portage Northern 7-0 Wednesday in the most complete performance yet this season for the Mustangs. The win claims the Portage Clasico trophy and keeps the current senior class for PC unbeaten in girls soccer against PN, although the Huskies could potentially get one more shot in the postseason.
The Mustangs assumed control quickly with Lauren McColley’s goal early in the third minute and Jaclynn Sibley’s score in the sixth. Portage Central had a 5-0 lead by halftime on additional goals by Lily Mih (25′), Sibley (34′), and Alana Hague (39′). Second half goals came via Hague (44′) and Mary Mitchell (46′)
Unofficially, the Mustangs had 16 shots on goal to only three for the Huskies. Abby Areaux and Kara Ehler combined for the shutout in net for PC’s fifth clean sheet of the season. PN’s Jordan Hartman stopped nine shots in defeat.
Portage Northern falls to 4-4-2 with the loss and 3-3-1 within the SMAC standings. Ahead is a trip to future district opponent Loy Norrix (2-3-0 SMAC) on Friday.
Portage Central improves to 7-2-2 overall and 6-0-1 in league play, battling for the top spot with defending champion Gull Lake (6-0-0). The Mustangs travel to third place Lakeshore (5-2-0) on Friday.
