Portage Central shutout Kalamazoo United 6-0 Wednesday evening, putting the Mustangs alone in second place in the SWMHSHL standings. It was also the second career shutout for junior goalkeeper Bryan Gracey, who was credited with 23 saves in the win.
A boarding major against United helped set up the lone first period goal with eight minutes remaining. Junior Luke Sproule tallied his first score of the season, assisted by Skyler Sorenson. Sproule would assist Gavin Brasosky midway through the second period for a shorthanded Mustang goal. Canyon Morse added a powerplay goal later for a 3-0 lead entering the second intermission. Morse scored again in the third with additional goals by Jaden Sorenson and Konnor McLeod.
United falls to 0-6 in the league standings and 0-10-1 overall with the loss. They host Hudsonville Friday at 5:30 p.m,, then meet the Kalamazoo Eagles Saturday at 1 p.m.
The Mustangs move to 5-6 overall and 4-2 in SWMHSHL play. They travel to Traverse City for non-conference action Friday against Flint Powers and Saturday versus Rochester United.
