Portage Central was defeated by Grand Blanc 8-3 in Saturday morning’s MHSAA Division 1 baseball state championship at Michigan State University.
It was the third baseball title berth for the Mustangs, who won it all in 2002 and took runner-up in 1997. For the Bobcats, it is their first-ever baseball crown.
Grand Blanc jumped ahead immediately with two runs in the top of the first inning. The score remained 2-0 until the Bobcats broke through with a six-run fifth inning.
After five shutout innings from GB’s Nate Helms, PC finally broke through with a three-run sixth inning. Nick Ford brought in Luke Leto with a RBI single, then Gavin Brasosky smacked a two-run home run.

Unfortunately for the Mustangs, The hole was too great to climb out of. Helms was the winning pitcher, going six innings with five hits, three earned runs allowed, one walk, and six strikeouts. Tim Welsh pitched the final inning clean in relief.
Ryan Dotson started for the Mustangs, pitching four innings with five hits, five runs (two earned), three strikeouts, and one walk Will Juday gave up three runs (two earned) over two innings of relief, followed by a clean seventh by Leto.
Portage Central finishes the season 35-5. Graduating seniors are Nick Ford, Ryan Pijaszek, Kobe Mason, Aidan Eichman, Luke Leto, Zach MacDonald, Connor Kolberg, Gavin Brasosky, Ryan Dotson, Thomas Boughton, and Cody Stewart. Grand Blanc finishes 32-11.
