Portage Central baseball advanced to the Division 1 state semifinals with Saturday’s victories at C.O. Brown Stadium in Battle Creek. The Mustangs topped Detroit Catholic Central 7-5 in their regional final, then downed top-ranked Grand Ledge 6-1 in the quarterfinal.
Second-ranked PC saw a gem pitched by Ryan Dotson, allowing only a fifth inning earned run over a complete game victory versus GL. Dotson struck out seven while surrendering only four hits and one walk.
PC led from the jump against the Comets ace Noah Warren, scoring once in the bottom of the first inning, three in the second, and two in the third. Zach MacDonald had two runs, two singles, and a double. Will Sachwitz scored twice.
With the win, Portage Central improves to 34-4 and Grand Ledge finishes at 37-3. The Mustangs advance to the semifinal for the sixth time in program history and the first time since 2011. PC will play in the 9 a.m. semifinal Thursday morning at Michigan State University against Midland Dow.

PC’s 7-5 regional final win over Detroit Catholic Central was a back-and-forth affair. Both got a run in the first inning with DCC getting another in the second. The Mustangs went up with two in the third, but the Shamrocks tied it up in the top of the fourth.
In the bottom half, PC plated two for a 5-3 and added two more for cushion in the sixth. DCC scored twice in the top of the seventh but couldn’t complete the rally.
Gavin Brasosky struck out 13 over 5.2 innings for the Mustangs, giving up six hits, three runs (two earned), and four walks. Luke Leto scored four runs with a single, double, walk, and hit-by-pitch. Nick Ford added three RBI and Cole Mason scored twice.
