Pinckney picked up a 7-4 road win Thursday evening against Portage Central, getting a six-point night from senior Sebastian Smith. Jaden Sorenson had a three-point evening in defeat for PC on two goals and one assist.
The first period was back-and-forth with the Pirates holding a 3-2 lead at the first intermission. Smith had the first two goals, then helped John Haberkorn on a powerplay strike. Sorenson and Will Anderson had the Mustang goals, the latter of which was on a powerplay.
The score stayed locked at 3-2 until Smith completed the hat-trick midway through the second period unassisted. A boarding major would sink PC’s hopes, leading to two Pirate goals later in the period. Smith tallied his fourth, followed by Austin Selmi. Brendan Sullivan added a third period shorthanded goal for Pinckney. The final two scores with to PC by Sorenson and Justin Hayward.
Unofficially, Pirate goalkeeper Maximilian Lederer had 18 saves in the victory. Logan Fusciardi stopped 24 in his varsity debut for Portage Central.
The Mustangs fall to 5-7 with the defeat and return to Wings West for a big divisional game Saturday afternoon versus Mattawan. Pinckney moves to 6-6 and heads to Jackson Saturday.
