Mendon’s boys cross country team, ranked No. 8 in the state in Division 4, won a St. Joseph County quad Tuesday with 28 points. Centreville was third with 49 points and Bronson finished with 55. White Pigeon didn’t have enough runners to post a team score.
The Hornets’ Zach Darmofal crossed the line in 17 minutes, 32 seconds for medalist honors. Centreville’s Brady Reynolds was third (17:55) and Mendon’s Michael Campbell (18:03) was fourth. The Hornets took three more spots in the top 10, with Jacob Hagenbuch (18:37) finishing sixth, Joe Gales (18:48) seventh and Alex Hackman (19:04) 10th.
The Bulldogs’ Matt Clementz (18:51) and Chase Alexander (18:56) placed eighth and ninth, respectively.
On the girls’ side, Mendon won easily with 17 points, followed by Bronson (53) and Centreville (66). Mary Leighton was medalist in 20:52, with a swarm of Hornets close behind. Jenna Gales (21:20) and Jenna Griffith (21:26) went two-three, Lauren Samson was fifth in 22:54 and Julia Sutter was sixth in 23:03. Centreville’s Marissa Mohny ran a time of 23:23 for seventh, Robyn Watson (White Pigeon) clocked a 23:30 for eighth and Grace Leighton was ninth for Mendon in 23:48.
