Ripping through the field at the Coloma Tournament Saturday, the No. 1-ranked Mendon volleyball team (Class C) defeated Schoolcraft 25-14, 25-11 in the championship match.
The Hornets topped Allegan and Kalamazoo Central in the pool play and semifinal action, respectively, to set up a title fight with the Eagles that ended up being a runaway win for the Hornets.
“A great day for us,” Mendon coach Kathy Trenary said. “Sluggish in the beginning. Our kids really like to compete, and when it got down to the end, especially against Schoolcraft, we had everything working. It was a really fun match to watch because Schoolcraft’s really fast. It was fast paced and our kids did really well.”
Brooke Howard and Loryn Baughman combined for 14 aces and Howard led the team with 59 kills and six blocks. Baughman steered the offense to the tune of 114 assists while contributing 21 kills and Jordan VanOss paced the Hornets with 67 digs and added 35 kills. Howard added 48 digs and Alexis Russell finished the night with five aces, 27 kills, five blocks and 45 digs.
