Mendon’s softball season ended on their home diamond Saturday as the Hornets fell 7-0 against Kalamazoo Christian in the regional semifinal round. Comet pitcher Aubrey Herder held Mendon to two hits in a complete game victory, striking out nine and walking five.
K-Christian was able to pick up scattered runs against Hornet pitcher Lauren Schabes, scoring solo runs in the second, fifth, and seventh innings and adding two in the third and two more in the sixth. Schabes’ final line was 10 hits allowed, seven runs, four earned runs, four strikes, and two walks. Kara Swan and Payton Griffith had the lone Mendon hits, both singles. The Comets had two-hit days from Morgan Shepperly, Raegan Broekhuizen, Maegen Meldrum, and Mackenzie Ash.
Ranked fifth in the final Division 4 coaches’ poll, the Hornets finish the season at 27-6. Kalamazoo Christian, ranked ninth at 22-18-1, moves to the regional championship game Saturday afternoon.
