Mendon’s wrestling team took fourth place at Saturday’s Union City Duals with a 3-2 record The Hornets beat Marshall 42-36, Colon 48-24, Olivet 45-24. Hastings edged Mendon 34-28 and Michigan Center was on the winning side of a 45-33 collision.
Jonah Grimm (130 pounds), Matt Noel (145), Brandon Bray (152), Danny Cleveland 160 and Cole Harrison produced 5-0 records on the day, with Ty Cool finishing 4-1 at 140.
Like many teams at the event, Mendon was injury depleted and missing bodies due to the holiday break. The Hornets gave up voids at 103, 119, 125, 171 and 189 Saturday.
“Head to head, I thought we wrestled really well,” Mendon coach Art Stephenson said. “I was happy about that. We had a good day. Matt Noel wrestled really well today. He’s starting to put things together pretty well. I’m really happy with how he’s starting to wrestle and coming along.”
“As he’s starting to get more experience he’s just more comfortable on the mat and is more confident in what he’s doing. Success breeds more success.”
