The Mendon girls basketball team held visiting Union City to single digits in all four quarters Tuesday en route to a 46-21 season-opening win.
Senior Brooke Howard registered a game-high 18 points and 11 rebounds, Cierra Furlong recorded eight points and three rebounds and Grace Leighton turned in six points, three boards and three steals.
The Hornets outscored Union City (1-1) 8-2 at the free-throw line and pulled away after building a 22-12 advantage by halftime.
“We have eight seniors on the team, so the bond came naturally when we all got going and everything just started falling into place,” Howard said. “Once we start hitting the open people on offense and forcing turnovers on defense, we got into the groove of things and picked up where we left off last year.”
Lauren Samson and Alexis Russell each finished with five points and four rebounds, Rachel Frisbie scored a basket and had three rebounds and Jenna Griffith had two points, six steals and three assists. Howard added five steals and Leighton swiped three.
