The Mendon girls basketball team scorched Colon in the first quarter and coasted to 66-26 victory Monday night to improve to 3-0.

“It has been a good start of the season for us,” Hornets coach Leasa Griffith said. “I think we have a lot of work to do and a lot of room for improvement. Even the girls will say that. I think the post play has developed a lot better and faster than I thought it would.”
Shaunta Adams led Colon (0-3) with 18 points, including a pair of 3-point baskets. Anessa Broker, Skyler Harvey and Gretta Minor each registered two points and Makayla Craun had one for the Magi. Craun secured a team-best six rebounds and Harvey contributed on the glass with four.
Rachel Frisbie added three points and Jackie Friel (five rebounds) and Cierra Furlong (four rebounds) both finished with five points for Mendon. Russell pulled down eight boards and Howard grabbed seven.
Leighton, who tallied five steals, Jenna Griffith and Samantha Griffith all chipped in two boards and Jenna Griffith also had seven assists.
“Overall, this was a strong team effort defensively and offensively,” Leasa Griffith said. Free-throw percentage is improving (11-for-13 Monday) and that is what we need to see as the season progresses.”
