A jaunt to New Buffalo Thursday yielded another victory for the undefeated Mendon girls basketball team. The Hornets, ranked No. 10 in the latest Associated Press Class C poll, overpowered the Bison for a 52-37 win to improve to 10-0.
Brooke Howard deposited 15 points and eight rebounds to lead Mendon, though the senior experienced a little bit of a scare in the third quarter when she was taken out of the game with an ankle sprain.
“Yeah, I will be all right,” Howard said. “I’ve had trouble with my left ankle throughout the season and right in the beginning of the game I sprained my right ankle. So my coach taped it up quick so I could get back out on the court. But unfortunately in the third quarter I re-sprained it and had to sit the rest of the game.”
Mendon was in good shape by the end of the third frame, holding a 40-20 lead over a Bison squad that fell to 8-2 this season.
Cierra Furlong notched 14 points, Grace Leighton scored eight, Alexis Russell posted seven, Jenna Griffith added five, Jackie Friel had two and Samantha Griffith finished with one.
Russell and Jenna Griffith (four steals) both secured five rebounds, with Leighton (four assists) grabbing four and Furlong snagging three.
