Blowing out of town before the winter blast, Mendon’s girls basketball team claimed a 39-26 victory Saturday at St. Joseph Michigan Lutheran to remain undefeated.
The 5-0 Hornets got a 16-point effort out of Brooke Howard, seven points and nine rebounds from Alexis Russell and six points apiece from Grace Leighton and Jenna Griffith. Cierra Furlong helped the cause with four points and four steals. Howard also had seven boards and six steals and Griffith made a team-high six assists.
“I am glad we got to play since we have had three weeks off,” said Mendon coach Leasa Griffith, whose team has outscored the opposition 273-126 so far this season. “Our defense worked well, and we worked through some of the rusty spots on offense. Michigan Lutheran is a very good team with solid fundamentals. They did a good job against us defensively. We know we have a lot to work on, and this was a good team win for us.”
The Hornets return home next Friday to open St. Joseph Valley League play against White Pigeon.
