Mendon’s girls basketball team had Quincy on the ropes in the first round Friday and cruised to a 55-10 victory to improve to 2-0. The Orioles fell to 0-2.
With a 15-0 cushion at the conclusion of the first quarter, the Hornets couldn’t even see the Orioles in their rearview mirror by intermission after a 17-2 outburst in the second stanza.
Brooke Howard netted 18 points and snagged six rebounds for Mendon, and Alexis Russell added 10 points and four rebounds. Jenna Griffith finished with nine points, two rebounds, six steals and four assists, and Jackie Friel notched eight points and three steals. The Hornets also received contributions from Grace Leighton (six points, three assists), Lauren Samson (two points, three steals, six rebounds) and Cierra Furlong (two points, five rebounds).
“I thought we played really well as a team and we definitely saw improvement from the first game,” Jenna Griffith said. “It’s really nice when you can work together and have everyone contribute. Having a bigger team, sometimes people don’t get to play as much, but with our girls, everyone takes the chances they get.”
Howard also had two steals and five assists, while Russell dished two assists.
“I felt tonight’s win was one where everyone contributed,” Mendon head coach Leasa Griffith said. “We looked for each other well and were very unselfish with the ball. The defense was good in both halves, and we communicated well at both ends of the floor.”
