Mendon traveled north to Marquette for Saturday’s MHSAA eight-player football Division 2 state championship at the Superior Dome; the first time in the eight-player final for the Hornets. Unfortunately for them, the Powers North Central dynasty continued as the Jets won 66-26. Mendon is now 11-2 all-time in football championship games, while North Central claimed their fourth straight title and 37th consecutive win.
Within the first minute, the Hornets found themselves behind by two touchdowns after the Jets took the opening kickoff to the house, followed by a Mendon fumble on their kickoff return and a quick TD. North Central carried a 28-0 lead into the first quarter break and a 41-6 score into halftime.
Two long rushing touchdowns from Jack McCaw in the third quarter fought off the running clock for a bit, but the potent Powers offense would race to a 40-point lead by the end of the third quarter.
McCaw finished with 211 yards on 19 carries for three touchdowns. Evan Lukeman had the other Hornet TD on the ground and rushed for 34 yards. Jets quarterback Luke Gorzinski was 13-24 for 207 yards and four passing touchdowns.
Mendon finishes the season at 10-3, an excellent season that got them their first finals berth since 2011. PNC closes at 13-0.
