Mattawan won at Portage Central Saturday in the district #13 championship volleyball match 25-14, 25-16, 25-18. The victory gives the Wildcats back-to-back district crowns, sending them to Tuesday’s regional at Gull Lake.
Third-ranked Mattawan assumed control from the very beginning, getting five aces in the first set from libero Allie Wiese. The tenth-ranked Mustangs kept the second set close initially, but Mattawan built a 12-8 lead by the first timeout and a 17-10 advantage by the second stoppage. The Wildcats wouldn’t trail at all in the third.
Unofficially, Mattawan saw 11 kills from Taylor Rutgers along with nine kills and eight blocks by Natalie Foster. Miss Volleyball finalist Ryann Jaqua topped Portage Central with 10 kills.
The Mustangs finish at 29-17 and graduate Jaqua, Megan Seeley, Mackenzie Lundin, and Ola Buss.
Mattawan improves to 46-2 and faces Mason in Tuesday’s regional semifinal at 5 p.m. from Gull Lake High School. The Blue Devils and DeWitt are on the other side of the bracket.
