Mattawan won at Portage Northern 5-1 Saturday evening to secure the District #1 boys soccer title. The win gives the Wildcats back-to-back district titles, sending them to Tuesday’s regional semifinal hosted by Dearborn.
The score was 1-0 at halftime with the lone goal by Mattawan’s Josh Filiputti in the 14th minute. The Wildcats came out hot to start the second half as 85 seconds in, Connor Burkett would give Mattawan a 2-0 lead. The Huskies would get momentum back as they scored in the 54th minute with Zander Crooks’ free kick getting deflected in via Isaiah Spillers.
In the 59th minute, Burkett’s second goal of the night gave the Wildcats a two-goal lead yet again. Five minutes later, a handball in the box gave Mattawan a penalty kick, which Filiputti drained. The Wildcats added one more in the 78th minute from Tommy Martinic, assisted by Ben Kaczmar. Mattawan keeper Carson Foor unofficially had two saves in victory with PN’s Jack McDaniel stopping four.
Portage Northern finishes the season at 9-7-2 and graduates seniors Cristian Hernandez, Cade Smith, Ammar Kharia, Isaiah Spillers, Gene Plaicdo, and Garrett Stoll.
Mattawan improves to 12-1-1 and joins Gull Lake and St. Joseph as the SMAC squads to secure district titles. The Wildcats will face Salem (13-2-1) in the 5 p.m. regional semifinal Tuesday at Dearborn High School. The other side of the bracket has Saline (14-1-1) and Dearborn Edsel Ford (10-3-1).
