A deeper Marshall boys swimming and diving team escaped with a 100.5-85.5 victory over an improving Sturgis squad Thursday.
“It was a tough loss tonight but the Trojan swimmers dropped a ton of time tonight,” head coach Andy Feyes said. “The team left nothing in the pool and so I was very pleased with how they swam.”
The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Grant Brown, David Polzin, Nathan Stemen and Hunter Stanke won with a time of 1:36 and qualified for the Division 3 state finals. Turning in a 3:38.63 was the winning 400 free relay from Sturgis consisting of Stemen, Brandon Jones, Daniel Tetzloff and Brown.
Tetzloff picked up a victory in the 200 individual medley, clocking in at 2:18.10, Brown won the 50 free (24.24) and 100 free (52.24), and Stanke claimed the top spot in both the 100 butterfly (1:02.29) and 100 breaststroke (1:05.46).
Marshall junior Henry Swett, the back-to-back defending Division 3 state champion in diving, put on an exhibition with 319.05 points. Sturgis’ Kris Gibbs (203.35) finished third with another solid performance.
Sturgis jumps back in the pool Saturday at the Bridgeman Invitational.
