Down by as many as 12 points in the first half, Colon’s girls basketball team battled back for a 33-25 home win Wednesday over Burr Oak.
The Magi have now won three straight after losing the first five games of the season, and they’ve also reached the .500 mark (3-3) in the Southern Central Athletic Association.
Anessa Broker poured in 16 points and Makayla Craun finished with 11 points and 23 rebounds for Colon, which cut the deficit to four by intermission.
“The girls did a very nice job working together tonight as a team,” Colon coach Sharon Craun said. “They never gave up even when they were down by quite a bit. We tried slowing the pace of the game down and worked on running our plays. We came right out [in the third quarter] and scored four points to tie the game up. We slowly from that point moved ahead.”
Skyler Harvey added five points and two assists, Morgan Czajkowski posted six rebounds and a point, Gretta minor had an assist, Kali Tyler registered two boards and a steal and Taya Bower grabbed seven boards and recorded an assist for Colon.
Chelsey Boyd led the Bobcats (2-5) with seven points, and Jade Lown, Tori Everitt and Michaela Ultz each added five. Hannah Root finished with two and Sydney Owens had one.
“We did not stop playing until the final buzzer,” Burr Oak coach Jennifer Sutton said. “Unfortunately, we did not bring our best tonight. Our defense was slow and our shots were not falling. Although I am really proud of freshman Hannah Root; her leadership skills were shinning through tonight.”
