A 1-0 lead at halftime turned into a 2-1 loss to visiting Battle Creek Lakeview Thursday for the Sturgis boys soccer team.
Carlos Maldonado scored on a penalty kick for the Trojans, which dropped to 4-3 overall. It was the only shot that got by Lakeview goalkeeper Jake Herbers, who finished with five saves.
James Hlawnceu tied the game on a penalty kick he buried in the bottom-left corner of the net at the 29:11 mark in the second half. Just over three minutes later, teammate Austin Anderson collected an arching pass from Bailey Snyder over the Sturgis defense to register the game winner.

“This was a tough loss for the boys because they were looking forward to playing against Lakeview and staying home with the win,” Trojans coach Luis Olivares said. “It’s hard playing without four of my starters who are out due to injuries. We were up 1-0 the first half and had many opportunities to put the game away, but we didn’t capitalize, and Lakeview saw the opportunity and took advantage.”
Sturgis keeper Isaac Montoya had six saves.
