Kalamazoo College men’s soccer picked up a 2-1 victory Saturday against Defiance, earning their first win of the season in their home debut.
The Hornets dominated the shots 12-3 in the first half, but most of them ended up wide or over the net. The Yellow Jackets had a few good looks early in the second half, although Kalamazoo took control again soon after, winning the overall shots 25-9 for the match.
The opening goal finally came in the 70th minute as a perfect centering pass by freshman Hayden Strobel found junior Jacob Pink in front of the net for the score. Less than six minutes later, Defiance had the equalizer as freshman Luca DeMartino was able to pop the ball into the upper corner and tie the match.
40 seconds later, Kalamazoo reclaimed the lead for good. An Aidan Hurley pass from midfield found an open Collin Sweet in the box, whose shot deflected off the post to a waiting Strobel for the clincher. The Forest Hills Northern alum Strobel earned his first collegiate points with the goal and assist.
Both teams move to 1-3 following Saturday’s result. Defiance meets another MIAA team with a trip Wednesday to Olivet. Kalamazoo hosts Carthage for non-conference action Wednesday.
