The Kalamazoo College basketball teams both fell in tight affairs as part of a basketball tripleheader Saturday at the Anderson Athletic Center. The Hornet men started their weekend tournament with an 87-76 defeat to John Carroll. The women then dropped a 57-55 result to Calumet College with the winning basket scored with 1.1 seconds remaining.
The men’s game was one of swings. Kalamazoo fell behind double-digits in the first half, rallied back within a possession, then entered halftime down 46-35. The Hornets briefly reclaimed the lead in the second half, but it was short-lived as the Blue Steaks found their momentum.
K falls to 3-3 with the loss and faces North Central in the 3 p.m. tournament game Sunday. The Cardinals blew out Olivet 93-53 in Saturday’s second game. John Carroll and Olivet play at 1 p.m. to open festivities Sunday.
The women’s game started with an 8-0 Kalamazoo lead. Calumet went on a 30-13 run for the rest of the half and held the lead until early in the fourth quarter. After a back-and-forth battle, it came down to Alyssa Lovato’s bucket with 1.1 remaining to give the Crimson Wave the edge, dropping the Hornets to 1-4 on the year.
