Kalamazoo Christian grabbed a home sweep over Constantine Tuesday evening to begin SAC Valley volleyball play. The third-ranked Comets won 25-17, 25-22, 25-13, giving them a divisional duel win over the Falcons for the second straight year.
Constantine began the match with momentum, jumping out to a 13-8 lead in the first set. The Comets went 17-4 for the remainder of the first, including an eight point run on the service of Carley Broekhuizen.
The Falcons again started ahead, holding an initial 9-5 lead in the second set. However, K-Christian answered with a five point run with Ellie Batts serving. After a tie at 10-10, the Comets wouldn’t trail again for the rest of the night. They would open the third game with an 11-5 start.
Unofficially, Broekhuizen led all players with nine kills. Avery Ekkens added six kills and three aces for the Comets with Sarah Wenke contributing five aces and four kills. Constantine’s Leah Dumm had five kills and 12 digs. Getting four kills each for the Falcons were Hannah Outlaw, Madi Tulley, and Alyssa Parmer.
The Falcons fall to 8-5-3 overall and return to action Thursday as they host Decatur. Their next SAC Valley match is a tough trip to second-ranked Schoolcraft next Tuesday, which can be heard live via JoeInsider.com.
K-Christian moves to 19-1-2 on the year and has a quad Thursday at Martin, also featuring Saugatuck and Delton Kellogg. The next SAC Valley match is at Lawton next Tuesday. The Blue Devils dropped their debut in a tight five-set match to Galesburg-Augusta.
