Listen live online via JoeInsider.com Friday evening at 7 p.m. as Kalamazoo Christian faces Hackett Catholic in the district 67 boys basketball championship from Gobles. It is yet another postseason showdown in another sport between the crosstown and conference rivals. For boys hoops, it will be their fourth district duel in five years.
Kalamazoo Christian enters the game at 20-2 overall with Hackett Catholic at 18-3. Both teams made the final Associated Press Class C rankings, the Comets sixth-best and the Irish eighth-best.
K-Christian comes in scoring 60.7 points per game while allowing 41.4 per contest. They finished a perfect 12-0 against the SAC Valley division, which they share with Hackett and potential regional foe Schoolcraft. The lone Comet losses came to SAC Lakeshore teams, Coloma in January (58-52) and Fennville in their regular season finale (51-49). K-Christian downed Gobles 63-34 and Lakeside Charter 66-43 in the district round thus far.
Two of Hackett’s three losses came to Kalamazoo Christian, 67-50 on January 12 and 58-38 on February 16. Their other was in overtime to Coloma in January 54-49, a loss they avenged in their penultimate regular season game. The Irish are scoring 67.6 points per game and allowing 49.6. Hackett’s lone district game was Wednesday’s 71-53 win over Bloomingdale.
The Comets are the defending district champ, beating Hackett 48-37 in last year’s semifinal. The win came for K-Christian despite falling to the Irish in both of the prior regular season contests. They went on as far as the quarterfinal round. Hackett was district champ and a quarterfinalist two seasons ago, although they didn’t meet the Comets in that playoff run.
Friday’s district championship can be heard live via JoeInsider.com with a scheduled 7 p.m. ET tip-off at Gobles High School. The winner moves to Monday’s regional semifinal hosted by Constantine.
