Kalamazoo Central grabbed a 78-58 road win Friday against Gull Lake, pushing the Maroon Giants to a 44-0 record in SMAC East division games since switching to the East in the 2014-15 season. Despite the 20-point final deficit, the Blue Devils were within two points as late as the midway point of the third quarter.
The first quarter had five lead changes with K-Central closing the quarter on a Trevon Gunter three-pointer for an 18-14 lead. The Maroon Giants wouldn’t trail again, but Gull Lake stayed within single-digits throughout the second quarter and were back within a possession toward the final seconds. Dayvion Smith sank a three with a second to spare to push the KC lead back to two-possessions at halftime, 36-30.
The Blue Devils made it back within two halfway through the third quarter with a 42-40 score. From there, the Maroon Giants closed the quarter on a 17-5 run and held a double-digit lead for the rest of the night.
The 78 point performance was the highest-scoring game this season for Kalamazoo Central. Four Maroon Giants had double-digit points, led by 16 from Gerald Crawford III. Blue Devil Caleb Collard led all players with 24.
Gull Lake falls to 1-8 overall and 0-3 within the SMAC East. They’re off until next Friday’s home match with Lakeview.
Kalamazoo Central improves to 7-1 and 4-0 atop the SMAC East. They’re right back at it Saturday at 3:30 p.m. hosting Grand Blanc, coached by former state champion Giants coach Mike Thomas.
