The Kalamazoo Central girls basketball squad fired on all cylinders offensively Saturday evening, securing a 79-42 home victory over crosstown rival Loy Norrix. The 79-point tally was the second-highest mark this season for the Maroon Giants, only behind their 82-point explosion last month against Gull Lake.
Sophomore Morasha Wiggins led the way with 24 points, along with 17 points and a burly 24 rebounds by fellow sophomore Laila Vincent. Senior Jayla Gilla added 16 for K-Central with Loy Norrix getting 10 apiece via KK White and Karina Gutierrez.
KC raced out to a 17-5 lead by the first quarter break and added another 16 in the second, although the Knights were able to match them in the second. The 42-point game was Loy Norrix’s fourth time cracking the 40+ mark, showing significant growth from their 20-point season debut against K-Central in December.
Although the Knights had another 16 points in the third quarter, foul trouble decimated any comeback efforts. The Maroon Giants put up 25 in the third and outscored LN 21-5 in the final frame.
Loy Norrix falls to 2-10 overall and 0-6 within the SMAC East. They travel to Portage Northern Monday, then host Schoolcraft Tuesday.
Kalamazoo Central moves to 8-6 and 5-1 in divisional play. Ahead is a trip Tuesday to Battle Creek Central and a home non-conference game with Chandler Park Academy. Both games are makeups of previously scheduled games.
