Kalamazoo Central soccer shutout Coldwater 2-0 Tuesday, picking up their first victory over the Cardinals since September 2013. Both goals in their 2019 home debut came via all-conference senior Paulo Alcala within the first 15 minutes of the match.
The opening tally was set up on an excellent cross by freshman Zach Risley, which Alcala was able to headbutt into the net in the sixth minute. After a pass from senior Giancarlo Comer, Alcala rocketed in the second goal from the edge of the box in the 15th minute.
Both teams ended up with similar shot tallies for the night. Coldwater came out firing in the early stages of the second half, but twice were denied via the crossbar on solid opportunities. The Maroon Giants clamped down in the latter minutes and successfully bled the clock as a rainbow overlooked the field following earlier thunderstorms that shortened the JV contest.
Sophomore keeper Ryan Talanda unofficially had six saves for the clean sheet with four stops by Coldwater’s Michael Orozco-Aburto.
K-Central begins the year at 1-0-0 and opens SMAC play Thursday as they host Lakeshore. The Cardinals start 0-1-0 and play their home opener Wednesday versus Tecumseh.
