Kalamazoo Central picked up a non-conference baseball win Wednesday, grabbing a 7-1 road win over Vicksburg. Solid pitching and defense won the day for the Maroon Giants, allowing only six baserunners on four hits and two walks.
Errors put Vicksburg behind the eight ball early, as K-Central was able to score four in the first inning with Matt Bau’s two RBI single being the only hit. Three hits brought in two more in the second, including a Mitchell Herder RBI single.
Vicksburg started the bottom of the second with three straight singles, getting one run on a Chase Myers RBI. K-Central minimized the damage via a 6-4-3 double play. A similar double play helped the Maroon Giants strand a runner at third in the fifth.
Herder struck out seven in his four inning start, allowing four hits and one run. Christian Rakowski gave up only one walk in three scoreless innings of relief. Rakowski and Hilario DeLaPaz both scored twice with Herder adding two RBI. Brenden Monroe gave up six runs (one earned) in his four inning start for Vicksburg. Colin Klinger allowed one run and no hits in three innings of relief.
The Bulldogs fall to 2-5 with the defeat and return to action with a key Wolverine Conference doubleheader at home Friday against Paw Paw. K-Central improves to 6-3 and hosts Three Rivers in a single non-conference game Thursday.
