Six local wrestlers made it to the top of their respective weight classes at Saturday’s Michigan High School Athletic Association individual regional tournaments to head into the state finals at Detroit’s Ford Field two weeks from now with plenty of momentum.
The top four finishers in each weight class advanced to the finals (March 1-2). In Division 3, Constantine sophomore Boe Eckman (35-2) collected three pins to win a regional championship at 215 pounds, which included a pin (1:51) over Delton-Kellogg’s Caden Ferris in the finals.
In Division 4, Mendon claimed a pair of individual championships after two-time state champion Skyler Crespo’s undefeated run through the 140-pound bracket and Emmett Bingaman’s title at 215. Top-ranked Crespo, a junior who is 46-1, beat Athens’ Rayden Roggow by 9-0 major decision in the finals following a first-round pin and a semifinal technical fall. Bingaman, a junior currently with a 44-1 record and ranked No. 1 in the state, started the day with a pair of pinfalls and edged Watervliet’s Matt Melcher 3-2 in the finals.
White Pigeon’s Kyle Black, a senior with a 42-2 record, won by pin and decision in the first two round and then pinned Hudson’s Dylan Smith (3:27) in the 145-pound championship.
At 285, Schoolcraft senior River Fox improved to 49-2 with two pins and then an 8-1 decision versus Bronson’s Alex Tyer in the championship.
From the Martin/Climax-Scotts squad, 152-pound senior Jordan Tutt moved to 45-3 after a major decision and pin to open the tournament, followed by a 1-0 decision against Carson City-Crystal’s Caleb Collins in the championship bout.
