Hackett Catholic claimed the District #114 baseball championship Saturday at Kalamazoo Christian. The Irish edged the Comets 9-8 in the semifinal, followed by an 18-4 win over Gobles in the championship game.
The semifinal was a back-and-forth affair with HCP up 3-1 after the first inning. KC tied the game in the third, then went ahead with three runs in the top of the fourth inning. Things got very tense in the bottom half of the fourth on a violent collision at home plate for the final out of the inning, keeping the Comets ahead 6-5.
Hackett baserunner Stephen Kwapis was injured on the collision, leading to tempers flaring between both dugouts. Kwapis was able to walk back to the dugout and while he was out for the rest of the game, he played in the championship.
The Irish would get the lead for good with a four-run fifth inning. K-Christian attempted a rally and got two runs in the seventh, but were unable to tie the game.

In the second semifinal, the game was tied between Heritage Christian and Gobles at 2-2 entering the fifth inning. The Tigers pulled away with four in the fifth and another three in the sixth. The Eagles finish 6-15.
A seven-run third inning began Hackett’s breakaway in the championship gmae. Steven Widger had four RBI with a double an dsingle. Kwapis, Alex Blasen, Brice Brown, and Zack Johnson each scored thrice. Gobles finishes at 5-15.
