The MHSAA lower peninsula boys tennis team championships were held throughout numerous sites Thursday and Friday. Hackett Catholic and Portage Central represented Kalamazoo county with Sturgis representing St. Joseph county. The Irish would make the deepest run of the three, as the 2019 Division 4 state champions would make it as far as the semifinal.
Division 4 was held at sites in Portage and Kalamazoo. #2 seeded HCP made quick work of their Thursday opponents with a 7-1 win over #15 Grosse Ile in the round of 16, followed by another 7-1 win in the quarterfinal over #7 Jackson Lumen Christi.
Against Grosse Ile, winners were Jack Ford (#2 singles), Tommy Kling (#3 singles), and Niklas Johansson (#4 singles), plus all four doubles pairs. Ben Bridenstine and Rhodes Conroy were #1, Sam Magnell and Anthony Toweson #2, Jack Gordon and Marcus Alcaraz #3, and David Charfty and Toby Alcaraz #4. The same players won against Lumen Christi.
On Friday, #3 seed University Liggett knocked out Hackett in the semifinal round 6-2. Getting wins for the Irish were Jack Ford and Tommy Kling. Graduating seniors for HCP are Nicholas DeForest, Jack Ford, Ben Bridenstine, Rhodes Conroy, Sam Magnell, Anthony Toweson, David Chafty, and Toby Alcaraz.
Over in the Division 3 tournament in the Holland area, #12 seeded Sturgis was swept 8-0 by #5 Chelsea in the round of 16. The three Trojan seniors came closest to victory, with Garrett Meyer forcing three sets in #4 singles and the #1 doubles pair of Tyler Bohacz and Grayson Swihart doing the same.
In the Division 2 tournament from the Midland area, #7 seed Portage Central claimed the first round match 7-1 over #10 East Lansing. All four singles competitors won for PC; Janek Mietusiewicz (#1), Daniel Meimers (#2), Darrian Chen (#3), and Armaan Sidhu (#4). Victorious doubles pairs were Easton Lentz and Zane Graham (#1), Will Sachwitz and Ryan Chenoweth (#3), and Garrett Trumblee and Jaden Springman (#4).
In the quarterfinal, the Mustangs fell in a tight contest to conference foe and #2 seeded Mattawan 5-3. The Wildcats claimed all four singles matches and the #2 doubles match. PC’s winners were the teams of Lentz/Graham, Sachwitz/Chenoweth, and Trumblee/Springman. Graduating seniors for Portage Central are Janek Mietusiewicz, Armaan Sidhu, and Zane Graham.
