Hackett Catholic Prep won the District #51 boys soccer championship Thursday evening with a 2-1 overtime win at Hillsdale Academy. The win locks up HCP’s ninth consecutive district title, although the Colts became the only team in that nine-year stretch to take the Irish to extra time within district play.
Overall possession and opportunities were roughly even throughout regulation. Seventh-ranked Hackett broke through at the end of the 26th minute as Stephen Hough scored after an excellent centering pass by Daniel Amat. Hillsdale Academy would match in the 67th minute via Jacob Krutsch, assisted by Conner Weldon.
It would take only 35 seconds in the first overtime for the Irish to reclaim the lead. Carson Coffman’s cross from the far side found Tobias Kuhn at the near post for the redirect. Hackett would allow only one shot on goal throughout extra time as goalkeeper Breyton Franklin unofficially made seven saves in victory. Lucas Tharp stopped 10 in defeat for the Colts.
The loss ends ninth-ranked Hillsdale Academy’s season with a record of 16-3-1. The Colts lose goalkeeper Tharp, along with fellow seniors Krutsch, Joel Brady, and Jacob More.
Hackett improves to 14-6-1 and plays at Portage Northern in the 5 p.m. regional semifinal Wednesday, with a schedule change moving the opposing semifinal to Tuesday and the regional championship to next Saturday. The Irish will meet the winner of Saturday’s District #50 final between Kalamazoo Christian and Heritage Christian. You can listen to that semifinal live Wednesday via JoeInsider.com
