Hackett Catholic Prep soccer claimed the SAC championship outright for the second consecutive season Monday, concluding league play with a 4-3 home win against Fennville. The Irish finish a perfect 7-0 against the SAC, while the Blackhawks place second in the standings at 5-2.
Fennville tried to spoil Hackett’s senior night and they stunned the Irish by taking an early 2-0 lead. Sophomore striker Christian Mendoza-Huynh scored in the 8th and 11th minutes to put the Blackhawks ahead.
Stephen Hough scored Hackett’s first goal in the 24th minute, followed by the equalizer in the 31st minute by senior Aidan Gillig for a 2-2 halftime score. Although the Irish finished the frame with total shots 15-5, shots on goal were only 5-4 unofficially.
In the second half, Hackett was able to dominate the possession and opportunities. At the start of the 49th minute, a foul to Gillig led to a penalty kick for fellow senior Brennan Creek. The future Western Michigan Bronco buried his 117th career goal to put the Irish ahead 3-2.
In the 64th minute, Creek assisted Gillig for his second of the night and a 4-2 Hackett advantage. Fennville got back within one in the 76th minute thanks to a handball call and ensuing PK for Mendoza-Huynh, completing the hat-trick. However, the Irish were able to survive the final minutes to secure the win.
Hackett moves to 13-5-1 overall and concludes the regular season Wednesday at Gull Lake. Their postseason journey begins next Monday at Lawton.
Fennville falls to 11-4-2 and travels to Byron Center Wednesday and Grand River Prep Friday to close their regular season. Their district starts with a trip to Parchment Monday.
