Hackett Catholic won on their home court over Schoolcraft 72-56 Tuesday evening, becoming the first team this season to defeat the Eagles. The Irish also remain unbeaten within the SAC Valley division along with defending champion Kalamazoo Christian.
The first quarter was back-and-forth with four lead changes and three ties. Hackett held a 19-18 lead at the end of the first. Schoolcraft tied it briefly in the second, but the Irish didn’t trail at any point in the frame, growing their lead to nine before settling on a 33-26 halftime advantage.
The third quarter was the decisive one for Hackett, who used an injury to Eagle point guard Kobe Clark to create havoc and turnovers in the backcourt. The Irish opened the quarter on an 11-0 run, capped off by an alley-oop slam by Heath Baldwin from Christian Bartholomew. Although Schoolcraft did eat into the deficit somewhat in the fourth, Hackett’s 22-7 third quarter was too much to overcome.
Four Irish players hit double-digit points, led by Baldwin’s 26. Chris Cooper’s 12 was the best for the Eagles.
Hackett moves to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the SAC Valley. They conclude 2018 with Friday’s Muskegon Holiday Showcase, where they’ll play Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart at noon.
Schoolcraft falls to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in the Valley. The Eagles have a tough one ahead at Kalamazoo Christian Friday, with both the boys and girls game to be broadcast live via JoeInsider.com.
