Gull Lake secured the District 19 boys soccer title Thursday evening with a 1-0 home victory against Plainwell. The lone Blue Devil goal came on a 25-yard free kick by Roni Sylejmani in the 17th minute.
The Gull Lake defense prevented Plainwell from a single shot-on-goal for the night, but some solid saves by Trojan goalkeeper Ben Gale in the first half kept it a one-goal game. Plainwell was able to lessen the barrage in the second half and get a few chances late on set pieces, but ultimately couldn’t convert. Gale finished unofficially with five saves in defeat.
With the loss, Plainwell finishes the season at 10-2-2 and graduates seniors Zachary Nobel, Nickolai Emde, Nate Faupel, Thomas Sapletal, Trenton Christy, and Mason Mollitor.
The Blue Devils improve to 12-2-1, winning their second district title in three seasons. Gull Lake advances to Wednesday’s 7 p.m. ET regional semifinal against Holland (15-1).
