Glen Oaks Community College’s women’s basketball team rallied in the second half on the road against Hope College’s junior varsity team Wednesday, but freshman Brie Starkey’s 3-point attempt at the horn rattled out in a 60-58 defeat.
The Vikings slipped to 6-2 in nonconference play after struggling to establish a rebounding presence. Hope grabbed 52 rebounds compared to Glen Oaks’ 32.
Freshman guard Auzehene King scored 23 points to lead GOCC, followed by Starkey (16) and sophomore guard Alaina Schwarz, who finished with eight points and six rebounds. Team statistics were not available.
“[We] played a great defensive first half leading 28-22 at halftime,” coach Joel Schroeder said. “We came out slow [in the second half] and allowed a 16-4 run, then scratched and clawed to be down 58-60 with five seconds left. “Hope had the advantage on the glass, 52-32, and that was the story of the game.”
