The Glen Oaks Community College softball team and head coach Tom Muckel shored up the catcher position for the next two years after former Grandville standout Jennifer Erhardt signed a letter of intent Thursday afternoon to play for the Vikings’ softball and basketball teams.
Muckel made the trip north for the signing, which was also attended by Erhardt’s parents, Amy and John, Grandville principal Chris Vanderslice and Grandville softball coach Troy Ungrey.
Known for her solid defensive play, Erhardt helped the Bulldogs reach the Division I state quarterfinals this past June, when they fell to Bay City Western 1-0.
“She’s very good defensively and I do know she’s a very good student, too,” Muckel said.
Muckel continued building the 2013-14 class Friday with the signing of former Plainwell third-baseman and shortstop Sydney Welcher, who attended Kalamazoo Valley Community College last year but did not participate in softball. Welcher batted .329 and had a 98-percent fielding average as a senior for the Trojans in 2011-12.
