White Pigeon squeaked out a 40-39 girls basketball win Tuesday evening at Marcellus. The Chiefs entered the fourth quarter down six, but were able to do just enough to escape victorious.
“We didn’t play exceptionally well tonight,” said WP head coach Brooke McClure. “We struggled offensively and we got into foul trouble. But our girls persevered and got the win!”
Luaren Dressler was the top scorer for White Pigeon with 13 points as Marcellus kept top-scorer Claycee West to nine.
“We were able hold the lead the whole game until 22 seconds in the game,” said Wildcats coach Don Price. “We took the ball out of Claycee’s hands, but Dressler hit a big three to give the only lead they needed. We made crucial turnovers down the stretch and couldn’t capitalize at the foul line to keep the lead at a bigger gap. ”
White Pigeon moves to 11-4 overall and 10-3 in Southwest 10 Conference play. The Chiefs are tied for second with Bloomingdale and trail Centreville (11-1) in the standings. WP hosts Cassopolis Friday.
The loss drops Marcellus to 7-8 overall, 4-8 within the Southwest 10 standings. They played a much tighter game in the rematch, as WP won 58-39 in early January.
“Hopefully we can take this type of play heading into the last quarter of the season and the postseason,” added Price.
A tough task awaits Friday as the Wildcats host Centreville.
