Three Rivers started the girls basketball season victorious Tuesday with a 54-43 road win over Niles.
The Ladycats entered halftime behind 23-19, although they made up ground late in the half on two three-pointers by Alivia Knapp. TR went ahead in the third quarter and put the game away with a 14-0 start to the fourth quarter, which saw three triples by Rylie Kelly.
“Good road win for us to start the season,” said Wildcat head coach Jason Bingaman. “Niles returns eight girls and put us out of our comfort zone a bit with what they were doing defensively.
Kali Heivilin was the top scorer with 13 points, closely followed by 12 apiece by Kelly and Hadley Miller. Miller was close to a triple-double, also snagging 10 rebounds and eight steals.
“We are a work in progress with getting our new girls meshing with returners at both ends and struggled with certain situations, but we also had some very good spurts we can build on,” noted Bingaman. “The kids kept playing their game and eventually got shots to fall. We had multiple girls make plays during runs throughout the game. Hopefully it will allow our nerves to calm a bit heading into Friday.”
Wolverine Conference South Division play opens Friday with a trip to Vicksburg, which can be heard live via JoeInsider.com. Niles starts SMAC West play Friday as they visit Mattawan.
