Galesburg-Augusta grabbed a 38-30 road win Friday night over Hackett Catholic, keeping the Rams unbeaten within SAC Valley play. The G-A defense created havoc all night, snagging 23 steals in total. Solid free throw shooting, especially by senior Sam Verburg, kept the Rams ahead for the entire game.
They held the Irish to only two points in the first quarter for a 10-2 lead. The Hackett offense found some rhythm in the second and used a 12-8 quarter to get back within four by halftime, 18-14. The Rams never would surrender the lead, although they wouldn’t get it beyond eight until late in the fourth quarter. The Irish couldn’t ultimately string enough buckets together for a strong second half challenge.
Verburg finished with 18 points, including a 12-15 mark at the foul line and nine consecutive down the stretch. Galesburg-Augusta went 23-35 in total. Jordyn Klimp also had a notable night with nine steals, six rebounds, and five points. Hackett didn’t have 15 free throw attempts all game, finishing 4-12 as a team. Natalie Toweson was their top scorer with 11 points.
The Irish fall to 1-4 overall and 0-3 within the SAC Valley. They have another tough test ahead Tuesday with a trip to unbeaten Gobles.
Galesburg-Augusta improves to 4-1, already besting their win total from last season. The Rams are 3-0 within the Valley and have a shot at first place outright if they beat unbeaten Schoolcraft in their road trip next Friday.
