Portage Central topped Kalamazoo United 6-2 Wednesday night in the first SWMHSHL action of the season for both squads. The Mustangs saw a career night from junior forward Jaden Sorenson, who tallied four goals in the victory.
PC kept the pressure up all night, tallying an absurd 63 shots on goal. The Mustangs took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission on goals by Sorenson and Justin Hayward. Sorenson’s second goal early in the second period gave Portage Central a 3-0 lead, but a powerplay goal from Hackett Catholic’s Garrett Warner late in the frame put it at 3-1 by the second intermission.
Things got chippy late in the second period and early in the third with both teams racking up a combined 72 penalty minutes. Sorenson scored twice more with another from Will Anderson to put the game out of reach, despite a second Warner goal midway through the third.
Loy Norrix’s Parker Remelius made an impressive 57 saves in a losing effort for United. PC’s Bryan Gracey stopped 20 in the victory. Konnor McLeod added three assists.
Portage Central opens league play at 1-0 and moves to 2-0 overall. They return to the ice on Friday, November 30 at home against Okemos.
