Sturgis rallied Friday for their first football win over Three Rivers since 2015. The Trojans defeated the Wildcats 25-21, scoring the winning touchdown with 43 seconds remaining on a 28-yard pass from Bradyn Webb to Xander Cosby.
Three Rivers scored the first two touchdowns of the game for the early 14-0 advantage with a Gavin Beuter one-yard rush and a Beuter three-yard pass to Garron Gahan. Sturgis scored with 4:36 left in the half on a nine-yard Webb pass to Connor Thomas. With 1:56 left, the Trojans blocked a punt with Blake Burkey recovering for the score. However, a missed extra point kept TR up 14-13 at the half.
Beuter’s second touchdown run put the Wildcats ahead 21-13 after three. Jacob Thompson scored on a 13-yard run with 7:03 remaining, but the two-point try was stopped to keep Sturgis behind 21-19. The Trojans finally went ahead with Webb’s 28-yard pass to Cosby with 43 seconds to go. Thomas then intercepted Beuter to secure the win.
The win gives former Sturgis quarterback Chance Stewart a 1-0 start to his head coaching career. The Trojans have their home opener ahead in week two against Allegan. Three Rivers will try to bounce back with a road battle next versus Vicksburg.
