Constantine’s football team heads to Olivet tonight searching for its sixth win and a playoff berth. The Falcons face a home squad that is tied with Battle Creek Pennfield at 6-1 atop the Kalamazoo Valley Association standings. However, the No. 8-ranked Eagles (Division) 5 lost to Pennfield 15-14 last weekend.
Falcons coach Shawn Griffith calls Olivet the “biggest, fastest team in the KVA.”
“They will run an [I-formation] and a lot of single-back formations and throw the ball about as much as they run the ball,” he added. “They have a third-year varsity tailback, Shane Loney, and as I said, are huge.”
Even in last Friday’s loss, Loney rushed for 181 yards on 30 carries. It was the only game in which he’s played that he didn’t cross the goal line.
Constantine has won three games in a row, but the streak is against teams with a combined 6-15 record. The Falcons close out the regular season against the best (they host Pennfield Oct. 25).
“We have been plugging away, we have three in a row, but know the level of competition is much greater this week,” Griffith said. “Senior two-way linemen Alex Miller and Bruce Heslet will be key to what we can or can not do up front on both sides.
“We hope to keep them honest on defense by running all three of our potential 1,000-yard rushers, Justin Hull, Andres Montoya and Matt Hasbrouck.”
